Learn to Learn

Each day we learn something new, whether we realize it or not. The skill of learning is how you acquire new skills, develop your ability to analyze problems, then integrate the new knowledge, and put it into practice.

Lifelong learning is the continuous building of skills and knowledge through experience over the course of your life. These experiences could be formal (training, tutoring, mentorship, apprenticeship, or university) or informal skills simply gained through life experience. Lifelong learning is a self-motivated pursuit of knowledge for either personal or professional reasons. It enhances your confidence within society as well as improves your employability.

 

There are four primary Learn to Learn skills:

  • oral communication
  • working with others
  • continuous learning
  • thinking skills

Thinking skills include:

  • problem solving
  • decision making
  • critical thinking
  • job task planning and organizing
  • significant use of memory
  • finding information

 

These are skills you use regularly in almost everything you do!

 

Why are these skills important?

These four fundamental skills provide you with a foundation to enable lifelong learning. Developing these abilities will help you retain information, find better ways of conducting a task, and perhaps a better way to build a tool.

Productivity and innovation are dependant on your learning capacity. In a highly technological environment, it’s more important than ever to have the skills and abilities to learn new technologies in the workplace and retain the information. Whether you are refreshing your math skills, want to develop your design ability, or move into a leadership role, you must have basic skills competence to succeed in your trade.
